Early in the year Jake gave an awesome Family Home Evening all about goals. He taught me and Thayne how to set and accomplish goals. He thought it would be a great idea for Thayne to set a goal to learn to ride a bike. He asked Thayne what he would need to do to accomplish his goal. With a little help Thayne came up with these answers:
-Buy a bike
-Buy a helmet and a bell
-Have mommy and daddy help me
-Practice 4 times a week, if the weather is nice
Another part of the FHE lesson was remembering the goals we make, so Jake also advised Thayne to draw and color two pictures of a bike (one to put on the fridge and one to hang in his bathroom). These help Thayne remember the goal he has made. They are still hanging up!
We asked Thayne if he wanted to buy the bike with money that he has saved (mostly our leftover change, which has added up quickly, and also some money from special occasions), or ask for a bike for his birthday. He decided he wanted to buy his bike himself and so we told him that we would purchase his helmet and bell (the bell was a MUST according to Thayne:).

A couple days later Jake found a great bike for sale on KSL. Thayne had just enough money for it, so he bought it, and then I cleaned it all up. We bought a fun bell and "Transformer" helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads!!! Thayne was thrilled!!!
Even though, at the time, it was pretty cold outside, Jake and Thayne went out to practice a few times. Now that the weather is getting much warmer it has been fun to take Thayne on longer bike rides and teach him a little more (there is still a lot to teach him..., also he did take a nasty fall that has made him timid..., this has also been teaching us patience :).
I have to admit that I LOVED Jake's FHE!!! It was the perfect lesson for our family!!!
